What Is Cavity Wall Insulation?

Many UK homes built from the 1920s onwards have two layers of external brickwork with a gap in between — known as the cavity. Filling this cavity with insulation helps to:

  • Reduce heat loss

  • Improve indoor comfort

  • Lower energy bills

Signs Your Home May Need Insulation

You may benefit from cavity wall insulation if:

  • Your home feels cold or draughty

  • Your heating bills are higher than expected

  • Rooms take a long time to warm up

  • Your EPC recommends cavity insulation

  • The walls are uninsulated or poorly insulated

We can check wall construction and verify whether your cavity is suitable.

Cavity Wall Extraction (Removal of Old or Failed Insulation)

M13 Energy - Insulation experts

Not all cavity wall insulation is installed correctly — and older materials can fail over time.

Poor or defective insulation can cause serious issues such as:

  • Damp patches

  • Cold spots

  • Mould growth

  • Internal condensation

  • Reduced energy efficiency

We safely remove old insulation using industry-grade equipment that vacuums the material out of the cavity without damaging the wall structure.

Why Insulation May Need to Be Removed

  • Flood or water damage

  • Poor installation by previous contractors

  • Inappropriate insulation type (e.g., old urea-formaldehyde foam)

  • Blocked cavities causing trapped moisture

  • Deteriorated or slumped insulation

After extraction, we can reinsulate the cavity using approved

modern materials — ensuring long-term performance.

Our Process

1. Survey & Inspection

3. Insulation or Extraction Work

1. Survey & Inspection

We carry out a full assessment of the cavity walls using borescope cameras and thermal imaging (where required).

2. Recommendations

3. Insulation or Extraction Work

1. Survey & Inspection

We advise whether insulation should be installed, removed, or replaced — and check eligibility for GBIS/ECO4 funding.
